Being A Better Manager
It’s very easy to make people agreed to your points but the real challenge comes when you have to maintain their poll in your favor each time.
Lets try to unfold a secret of how anybody makes the success come to his way by making others working for him with the same vision. I know a person who when started a company had nothing to offer to his employees but just the hopes for the better future. There were no big dreams, no lucrative salary, no incentives, no yearly bonus, no tours, no perks to be offered but a dream of becoming big, known and established.
No this article is not about the success story of the person, may be I would like to narrate it after few years. But right now my concern is more about how he got others dance on his tune. Below are some Guiding Tips that I observed in him.
1) Be happy for the growth of your employees and subordinates equally as for your own.
This is the first tag line which is very much necessary in order to be successful. Never ever think that the person who is working under you is the one who has got to be there always. Be a part of his success story as well. And genuinely participate in his efforts. Guide him with whatever knowledge you have. Bring life to their dreams as well while doing that for yours.
And never be afraid that he may overpower you. Even if he does that one day, always be the one who admire him for that even. This may not double up your turnovers but if you can genuinely cultivate the thought then you will prove to be a winner already and there is no competition between him and you. You will be a winner in the struggle of being a better person and there by contributing something spiritual to your growth. This spiritual growth is most important one among all as this is the only one which goes with us after death.
2) Let the employees be the boss of himself.
Let yourself be nowhere in the scene of making the rules of do's and don’ts. Just make a format for the employees and let them make the rest of the frame of the picture. Its not that they will get punctual for every work schedule or never come late to the office, but then you never need to ask them the reason for that. The members will themselves update you with the things and also they will make sure to avoid such excuses next time. This is going to save lot of your energy and time which can be put in increasing the productivity.
3) Be their friend instead of their Boss.
The above point which is heard very often but is practiced the least is one of the most important one.
Let me give you an example. My immediate senior in my last company was a very high headed man. Very arrogant and always maintained a distance between him and his team members. He kept an eye on us even in the canteen. He called up the meetings every week just to scold us for our performances. Slowly we started hating him and besides the terror that he tried to create in us we went totally out of the track. We deliberately started hampering the work which hampered our growth also, but who cares. We were happy that at least we are doing some harm to the company which we wrongly assumes as a harm to our manager.
Then one day without a prior notice The CEO of the company came to the floor. I was suffering terribly with cold and was coughing like anything. Suddenly I realized a hand on my head and a voice could be heard "are you alright Manishi? Better take a leave." To my surprise he was the CEO of the company and I was shocked that he called me with my name when there are at least 1000 of employees in the company. That day I realized that by not working properly I am not harming my manager but my CEO who is one of the friendliest people in the company.
4) Have Faith in your employee.
Remember a person alone can never become successful. It’s the whole team that puts their sweat to make the success shine for him. Once you put a seed of friendship in the organization then nurture the plant with faith. Trust on the decision of your employees as now your company is not yours alone. It belongs equally to your employees who as desperately want to make the company as successful as you want.
5) You and the Company are two different entities.
CEO's comes and goes, what remains is the company. So do not pride for your endeavor as when seen as a whole then you added the efforts for 25-30 years only. Do not get emotionally too attached to the company or any of the possessions of yours as like others you will also have to leave all this forever.
In last I would like to say that do not wrap the success mantra superficially in order to be successful but make them a part of you. As the pretendence will be gone with the time and you will end all your energy in make ups.
